Lime Render

little bit about lime mortar

 Different types of lime

There are various types of lime mortar, including non-hydraulic lime mortar and hydraulic lime mortar.

Non-hydraulic lime mortar (know as fat lime or quick lime) hardens through a process of carbonation, where it absorbs carbon dioxide from the air.

Hydraulic lime mortar( knows as NHL), on the other hand, hardens through a combination of carbonation and a chemical reaction with water.

Benefits of lime mortar

 1 Breathability

Lime mortar is highly breathable and allows moisture to pass through it. This breathability is beneficial for older buildings made of porous materials, such as stone or brick, as it helps to reduce the risk of trapped moisture and subsequent deterioration.

2 Flexibility

Lime mortar has a certain level of flexibility, which allows it to accommodate slight movement and settlement in buildings. This flexibility helps to prevent cracking and structural damage.

3 Self-healing properties

Lime mortar has the ability to self-heal to some extent. It can slowly reabsorb carbon dioxide from the air, which helps to repair small cracks and maintain its integrity over time.

4 Environmental benefit

Lime mortar is considered more environmentally friendly than other types of mortar, such as cement-based mortar. It has a lower carbon footprint, as it requires lower energy inputs during production and generates less carbon dioxide emissions

Remember!

There is not one type fits all when it comes to the type of lime.

Skill level, building condition and desired finish should all be consider when choosing the appropriate lime to use.
